The fast-pace world of retail offers an array of exciting career opportunities. At Belk, many of our successful professionals began their retail careers on the sales floor or as participants in a structured retail training program.
Internships at Belk take you beyond the classroom to actively participate in the daily operations of a multi-billion dollar retail fashion business. The program is designed for a diverse group of rising college juniors or seniors from accredited schools who possess a serious interest in a retail career. Our interns show strong leadership potential, excellent work ethics and effective people skills.
A limited number of paid internships are offered for Spring, Summer and Fall in career areas including: store management, merchandise buying and product development. If you meet the requirements listed below, we invite you to explore the many career possibilities that the retail industry offers. Successful Belk interns are eligible for scholarships (see details below) and are the most sought after candidates for Belk's Executive Trainee Program.
Internship Scholarship Program
Belk, Inc. will award up to twenty (20) non-renewable $1,500 scholarships to successful Belk retail interns. A scholarship application and project guidelines will be provided during the internship. The deadline for submitting a completed scholarship application is September 1.
Scholarship Criteria:
- Rising college juniors at an accredited four-year college/university, who have successfully completed the Belk Retail Internship Program.
- Preferred GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in related majors (Business, Marketing, Management, Fashion Merchandising/Retail/Clothing & Textiles).
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Must be pursuing a career in the retail industry.
- Outstanding internship performance as measured by evaluations and recommendations.
- Must submit internship project for scholarship competition by set deadline.
Internship Program Descriptions
Store Management
During this structured 300-hour (10-12 weeks) paid learning experience, interns are involved in the daily operations of a multi-billion dollar fashion department store business. You will gain hands-on exposure to various management roles - visual merchandising, human resources, shipping and receiving, sales support and loss prevention, while mastering the art of customer service. As part of the program, you will create and implement a business-related project which demonstrates your leadership and organizational skills. At the Annual Belk Intern Day hosted by the corporate office, you will meet other interns, interact with corporate business representatives and gain insight into various careers options available at Belk.
Buying
Gain one-of-a-kind real world experience working with a Belk buyer at our corporate offices in Charlotte, N.C. If you have a passion for the analytical side of the business and an interest in tracking fashion trends this experience will give you insight into the role of corporate retail buying. Strong consideration is given to candidates with previous retail experience. You will learn many of the merchandising systems, interact with vendors, attend various events and support buying offices during this 10-12 week paid internship. As part of the program, you will create and implement a business-related project which demonstrates your leadership and organizational skills.
Product Development
As a product development intern you will learn and experience basic merchandising, product development and production skills for the private brands found exclusively at Belk stores. If you are creative and detail-oriented you will enjoy working within this department. Strong consideration is given to candidates with previous retail experience. In this 12-week paid internship study you will experience first-hand every job required to create, produce and deliver quality products for our consumers. You will be involved with international vendor communications, attend routine fit sessions, participate in buyer meetings and learn the daily functions which support and assist product managers. As part of the program, you will create and implement a business-related project which demonstrates your leadership and organizational skills.
Other Internships
As opportunities arise for developing additional talent, we hire interns in other areas of the business including finance/accounting, advertising/special events, MIS, communications, human resources and eCommerce.
