I am a third-generation train lover – my children are fourth generation. My family has always used O-gauge (I grew up with O27 but have started to use Fastrack with my kids). This Ready-to-Play set, however, is much more kid friendly than the O-gauge trains and tracks that I've been using. My most train-obsessed child, a 6-year old, was able to set up the track all by himself and enjoyed taking it apart and putting it back together in new configurations (the included tracks allow for a circle, an oval, and a square-ish shape with rounded corners). He doesn't have a problem with Lionel O-gauge couplers, but the couples on this train set were even easier. All three of my kids (8, 6, 2) love the interchangeable faces on Thomas (and they especially like to laugh at Thomas' face when he doesn't have a faceplate on and it's only his eyes!). The set seems sturdy and I like not having to run electricity from the track/transformer into the wall like my other train sets. This train runs on six C-cell batteries, though, which can seem like a lot. That said, Thomas has been pulling Annie and Clarabel now for several hours and the batteries haven't died yet. My only real complaint about this train set is the noise – if Thomas is turned on, he is making very unrealistic noises that are supposed to sound like Thomas' pistons-pumping (at least I think that's what the noise is). My kids love being able to push the buttons on the remote to make noise, but I have been very tempted to take Thomas apart and disable his speaker. The wheels make a natural "clickety clack" type of sound simply by running along the track, why does Thomas' speaker also have to produce a fake sound with no way to turn it off? I have another Lionel set with the fake noises, but it has a switch to turn those off – if the switch exists on this Thomas set, I can't find it and the manual doesn't mention it. To be honest, it sounds a bit an old machine-gun sound effect from a kids' toy from a few decades ago. Beyond the noise nuisance, though, my kids really do love the set and I like having a good-quality train that is more kid friendly. This train will most likely be the one around our tree this coming Christmas season. The Thomas and Friends Read-to-Play set features the classic Thomas battery-powered locomotive and his passenger car friends Annie and Clarabel. The set includes 32 individual pieces of track, 24 curved and 8 straight. Track assembly is relatively simple; however, an adult should supervise track assembly. There is enough track to create a circle, an oval or a rectangular layout. The train control is easy to operate and is hand held; it is well detailed for easy operation. Additionally, the set includes three interchangeable Thomas faces for the engine; the faces work perfectly with Thomas’ moving eyes and realistic sounds effects. My son and I had a blast running this train. He loved the ease of the control. The set does not include any additional figurines or accessories to decorate your set with; nor does it come with the necessary batteries for operation – (6) C cell batteries for the engine and (3) AAA batteries for the remote control. However, this should not stop you from enjoying this set. This is a Lionel great train set that is built to last with the perfect price point. Highly recommended. The multiple faces are a really neat addition. Makes plenty of different noises and whistles, my son is going to love it. The engine runs smooth and is very responsive to the remote. I wish the track worked with the older track I have to make it even bigger but there's additional track you can buy. It makes a plenty big loop with what is included though. The only thing I can say as a guy who has played with trains all his life is the chuffing sound doesn't synch up well at all with wheel speed, but again, the kids will have a blast. As with most things Lionel, it feels like a good quality and should last a long time. The controls are very simple, easy, and child-friendly. I love how easy the set is to put together; it reminds me of the sets I used to play with as a kid. The detail in Thomas, Annie and Clarabel are fascinating and life-like (especially with the moving eyes). The recommended age is 4+ but my 3 year old son has not issue at all. It is simple enough for him to put the full set on the tracks, connect them together, turn Thomas and the remote on, and use the remote with all of its functions. The provided amount of track is just right. Thomas is very detailed including the moving eyes as he rolls down the track. The interchangeable faces is a nice touch as well. The roof on Annie and Clarabel are able to be removed. It's a nice feature since my son fills the passenger cars up with other toys as cargo and passengers. The only downside is the amount of batteries that are needed. The batteries are becoming a bit expensive since we are having to use so many. It’s a great product that can keep train loving kids fully engaged and entertained.
