SHEET THREAD COUNT GUIDE

Finding the right sheets is more than just choosing the right size, patterns and colors. Thread count is also an important detail to consider when shopping for bedsheets, but what you should be looking for is not always clear. What is a good thread count for sheets? Is higher always better? How can you tell the differences? Find out everything you need to know about thread count before you buy new sheets with our thread count guide.

WHAT IS THREAD COUNT — AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Let’s start with the most important question of a sheet thread count guide. What is the real meaning of thread count? Thread count is the number of threads in a one-inch-by-one-inch square of woven fabric. In other words, it describes how tightly woven the fabric is and you’ll commonly see it used to measure quality and softness. More threads per inch means a tighter weave, and sometimes, a tighter weave means softer fabric.

Despite what you may think, a higher thread count isn’t always better. Some manufacturers boost their thread count numbers by twisting more than one thread together before they weave their sheets. This multiple-ply approach creates three times as many threads, artificially inflating sheet thread count without any of the added benefits.

The ultimate takeaway? Thread count matters, but it’s not the only thing to consider when shopping for your next set of sheets. You should also shop with high-quality fiber in mind because the type of thread and the type of weave will affect how your sheets feel to the touch. A high thread count sheet made with rough threads will feel less comfortable than a medium thread count sheet made with luxury threads.

FABRICS AND THREAD COUNT RANGES

You know what fabrics you find comfortable, so keep that in mind when shopping for bedsheets and other bedding. Thread count really matters when it comes to single-ply cotton sheets, so you should also consider the weave of the fabric along with your other personal preferences. Here’s a quick guide to thread count in different kinds of sheets.

Linen:
80 to 140 Thread Count

Linen sheets are durable, smooth and great for keeping things cool and dry. Linen fibers are thicker and more irregular than cotton fibers, resulting in sheets with a lower thread count than a cotton fabric of the same weight and density. For that reason, you’ll typically see linen sheets with thread counts of 80 to 140.

Cotton:
200 to 400 Thread Count

Standard cotton is a classic for many good reasons. It’s breathable, comfortable and long-lasting, making it a great choice for bedsheets. After all, who wouldn’t want sheets that look and feel great while holding up well in the washing machine? Cotton sheets are available in a range of sizes, colors and patterns, making them great for a variety of décor schemes. A good thread count for sheets made from cotton is 200 to 400.

Percale Weave:
200 to 400 Thread Count

Percale weave sheets are made from 100% cotton and cotton blends, with both having much tighter weaves. The weaving process produces soft, long-lasting fabric with a crisp, cool feel. With a winning combination of durability and comfort, you’re likely to come across cotton percale sheets in hotels. If you’re considering them for your home, look for sheet thread counts between 200 to 400.

Egyptian Cotton:
300 to 400 Thread Count

Made from cotton plants grown exclusively in Egypt, Egyptian cotton is finer and softer than regular cotton. You’ll find this luxurious fabric sold as bed sheets, bath towels and other linens. The finer threads result in a higher sheet thread count than average cotton sheets—around 300 to 400.

Bamboo:
300 to 500 Thread Count

Derived from bamboo fibers, bamboo sheets are soft and breathable. The actual fabric can be made from lyocell, rayon or modal fabric, although you will find some sheets that contain a blend of other materials. Because bamboo grows so quickly, bamboo sheets are considered a sustainable and durable choice. You’ll generally find bamboo sheets with a thread count of 300 to 500.

Sateen Weave:
300 to 600 Thread Count

Sateen fabric boasts a different weave pattern that produces a heavier bedsheet. Denser and less breathable than percale, this fabric is best for cooler months. A denser fabric means a higher thread count, so you’re likely to come across sateen weave sheets with a thread count of 300 to 600.

DOES EVERY FABRIC HAVE A THREAD COUNT?

Our sheet thread count guide wouldn’t be complete without some helpful tips for sheet shopping. It is key to remember that thread count isn’t the most important thing. If you’re shopping for sheets that aren’t made from cotton or bamboo, thread count simply isn’t as relevant or helpful.
These popular sheet fabrics may or may not have thread counts listed, so it’s more important to consider how these fabrics feel against your skin:
